A kid from Puerto Rico playing Rambo becomes a decorated Army officer and then transforms into a leadership coach. This isn't a movie plot - it's Federico Martinez's life story.
In this episode of Unlock Your Way with STK, host Suzanne Taylor-King sits down with Federico, a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel turned leadership coach.
Federico's journey from the mountains of Puerto Rico to leading real-life military operations is nothing short of inspiring. He shares how a chance encounter with ROTC in college led to a 21-year military career in communications.
But Federico's story doesn't end with retirement. As he puts it, he's "retired, not expired." Now, he's on a mission to help others lead effectively, drawing from his military experience and civilian certifications.
Suzanne digs deep, asking Federico about the parallels between military communication and civilian leadership. His response? "You can talk about us, but you can't talk without us." This mantra underscores the critical role of clear communication in any leadership position.
The conversation takes an introspective turn as Federico reflects on his drive to serve others. He credits his humble upbringing and family values, sharing touching anecdotes of selfless giving that shaped his worldview.
Suzanne and Federico also tackle the challenges of transitioning from military to civilian life. They discuss the importance of finding purpose after service and using one's experiences to add value to others' lives.
Perhaps the most powerful moment comes when Federico reveals his motivation: seeing others succeed and playing a part in their journey, often without recognition. It's a testament to true servant leadership.
This episode dives into leadership, communication, and the enduring impact of service. Whether you're a veteran, a business leader, or someone seeking inspiration, Federico's insights will leave you motivated to make a difference.
Tune in to hear how one man's commitment to service continues long after the uniform is hung up, and learn how you too can unlock your potential to lead and inspire.
00:00:00:00 - 00:00:11:10
Federico II Martinez
and I learned that without, being able to communicate what you're trying to put out there, and relying on your team to make things happen.
00:00:11:10 - 00:00:12:18
Federico II Martinez
you're not going to get that far.
00:00:12:18 - 00:00:39:00
Suzanne Taylor-King

00:01:01:01 - 00:01:08:18
Federico II Martinez
Thank you so much. A for July is 5th July fifth, but guess what you had to represent. Got to represent, you know.
00:01:08:18 - 00:01:10:02
Suzanne Taylor-King
Yes yes.
00:01:10:04 - 00:01:10:22
Federico II Martinez
Yes.
00:01:11:00 - 00:01:42:00
Suzanne Taylor-King
Well, this is really exciting and I'm so excited. Was I saw your, your decorations and your tie today because of your interesting little bit about your story. Not only are you a leadership coach, you're a great guardian certified coach, you're Ted Maxwell certified coach. Like your background in the military? Just super impressive. And meeting you personally. You stand out.
00:01:42:02 - 00:02:14:19
Suzanne Taylor-King
You stand out with your energy. You stand out with your presence. And, I don't know. That's super inspiring to me. And then you show up like this today. America proud. and I just really want to get into not only your background, but how you're serving now, being retired from the military. So let's start off first with a little bit of your story, how you got into the military in the first place?
00:02:14:21 - 00:02:42:07
Federico II Martinez
Oh my goodness. it is a kind of a long story, but, let me try to do my best to to make the condensing in, like about three minutes on top. So, I am the first officer, in my family. And my family. Well, I serve, in wars from World War II all the way to, you know, the last war, oif and over Operation Iraqi Freedom and mechanics.
00:02:42:07 - 00:03:02:14
Federico II Martinez
And so I'm the first one and I'll, officer but I have enlisted, family members, personnel that were enlisted in this service, like I mentioned, in all of the wars and I was intrigued me, you know, growing up, I was just a kid in, in, in, in the, I'd call myself a hillbilly from Puerto Rico.
00:03:02:16 - 00:03:36:05
Federico II Martinez
Hilo. but I live in the mountainous area of Puerto Rico. So we just like to play, you know, with sticks and, you know, chase each other and just shoot. Play Ray Rambo basically. That's what we grow up watching Rambo and in Amahl and All Commando and all those things. Right? So I always have that in to eat and treat me and, and there's, an uncle of mine that particularly came back from, Mr. Storm and he brought back with him, and we can say that he's done all the service that he brought with him some, let's call it token.
00:03:36:05 - 00:03:57:16
Federico II Martinez
Say, you know, he gave me, like a Rambo knife, me a military, flashlight and a bowl and saying like, oh, my God, what is this? So it just just hit me up. So, 1995, I was about to enlist in the Marines and some things happened there and say, now, that's not that's not going to happen.
00:03:57:16 - 00:04:19:03
Federico II Martinez
Basically, the Marines were hazing soldiers in the boot camp, and I said, I'm not going there and going to college. so it's been a couple of years in college. And in 1998, I was in a college that, a good friend of mine. And the being with best friend, introduced me to the Army ROTC program.
00:04:19:05 - 00:04:45:12
Federico II Martinez
And, you know, I ended up in signing out by enlisting 99 and 99, Denver nine, 1999, in the air reserves. And in 2001 I commission as a second lieutenant. so a communications officer in the Army and I it culminated my career in December 2022. You know, a couple deployments here and there and, but, yeah, I'm grateful for, for for that.
00:04:45:12 - 00:05:03:02
Federico II Martinez
So, yeah, it happened very much by accident. joining the ROTC is a friend of mine. Yeah. Do you want to do exercise in the morning? They have this thing going on at 530 in the morning. I show up and. And they'll be in the Army ROTC and, don't. I haven't looked back ever since, though.
00:05:03:04 - 00:05:11:10
Suzanne Taylor-King
Yeah, well, I was intrigued by your specialty, in the army. And can you talk about that a little bit?
00:05:11:12 - 00:05:43:02
Federico II Martinez
So, so a communications officer. So basically we manage, the responsibility we're responsible for managing all communications related to organizations and set up. So, it let's put it in simple terms, communications, as you know, internet boy is, data obviously. So when you go and deploy, it is even more, more exciting and more what you would call it, more important.
00:05:43:04 - 00:06:07:14
Federico II Martinez
There's a saying that we say we have in the, in the comms world, and as you can, you can talk about us, but you can't talk without us. You know, because when things go, go bad with comms, oh my goodness. People just go just loose a bunch of things. Everything is good. You're in hero. you're responsible for making sure that that your leaders and all the ones that need communication get it.
00:06:07:16 - 00:06:17:05
Federico II Martinez
And, this is has to be almost role is imperfect. and in every kind of situation because, your life depends on it.
00:06:17:07 - 00:06:42:15
Suzanne Taylor-King
Well, isn't that the truth? With every type of leader, whether it's military or what you're currently doing? Now, let's, I saw the correlation immediately doing my research on you. that communication really is the backbone of leadership.
00:06:42:17 - 00:07:02:18
Federico II Martinez
Yes. That's correct. Oh, yeah. You got to clearly communicate your intent. You got, you got to know how to communicate with other people. and that is, you cannot use a blanket sheet in the in the military for everything. and that's one of the strengths, I guess, that I have. They help me, succeed. For as long as I've been in the military.
00:07:02:18 - 00:07:32:13
Federico II Martinez
Serve over 21 years. I they didn't make they make it to anyone in two years. And in the rank of lieutenant colonel by myself, at the beginning was a little bit, rough, because, again, I'm getting my feet with the environment, and. But then I figure it out. I cut up pretty fast, and and I learned that without, being able to communicate what you're trying to put out there, and relying on your team to make things happen.
00:07:32:15 - 00:07:55:02
Federico II Martinez
you're not going to get out, and you're not going to get that far. And a lot of people that probably were more talented, smarter than me and, you know, a hundred times more potential in me fell off the cracks because they they didn't have that. It was like a meat thing, versus a weak thing. And, yeah, I'm grateful for that.
00:07:55:03 - 00:08:04:09
Federico II Martinez
You know, if you can kind of articulate that and you don't know how to use your team with their strengths, you stuck, you're not going to succeed.
00:08:04:11 - 00:08:31:18
Suzanne Taylor-King
Yeah. And and it's so true. the leaders that I've worked with, whether they are a coach or a business owner or community founder, that foundation of being able to communicate mission values, maybe it's even down to strategy and tactics, SOPs it. If they can't communicate those things, people can't help you with your mission.
00:08:31:20 - 00:08:52:17
Federico II Martinez
And then there's the thing. There's the communication in the delivery. yeah. it has to do, you know, if we can say we can have the same script, but you're going to deliver it a different way that I deliver it. Right? The tone there is, there is, you know, you got to tone it to the recipe.
00:08:52:20 - 00:09:02:22
Federico II Martinez
And, you know, there's a couple things that people think to overlook when you start communicating with others that there are huge. And Matsui.
00:09:03:00 - 00:09:45:04
Suzanne Taylor-King
Yeah, it really is about communicating with your team or your audience. Like if you're a content creator and you're communicating with your audience, or you think you're communicating with your audience and you're talking to problems they don't have, it's impossible to get it to land and to register. let's talk a little bit about how you actually figured out that after you retired from the military, how did you figure out where you wanted to go with your knowledge base, with that intellectual property that you walked away from the military with?
00:09:45:06 - 00:09:59:11
Federico II Martinez
Yeah. So so I haven't 100% figure out. But I know that when I retire, I say I had this saying is I'm retired but not expired. I even have a shirt that retired, not expired.
00:09:59:11 - 00:10:00:12
Suzanne Taylor-King
I love that.
00:10:00:14 - 00:10:06:08
Federico II Martinez
Because I think people think that when retire means you're done.
00:10:06:10 - 00:10:07:01
Suzanne Taylor-King
like.
00:10:07:03 - 00:10:30:07
Federico II Martinez
In the military, retirement should be, you know, your next step, your next chapter to make greater things. I mean, I don't do that, so I'm just going to write off and disappear and do absolutely nothing but what we spent so much time, and we have so much experience that we can share with others and make others better.
00:10:30:09 - 00:11:00:13
Federico II Martinez
And that's what my passion is, is all about adding value to make others better. you know, when you try to use your military skills and add the skills that you acquire in the civilian sector or certifications here or there, there is something that we can do with real estate, you know, or, you know, you just sit there and I say, hell no, I'm not going to sit down on the couch and gain a little weight and get unhealthy because I served 21 years and I got a good pension.
00:11:00:13 - 00:11:09:10
Federico II Martinez
No, that was not me. So let's say, you know, there's more there's more to this. There's a lot of people out there that need help and we're working them.
00:11:09:12 - 00:11:39:18
Suzanne Taylor-King
Yeah, I think that's why I'm so passionate about people like you. My dad was someone like you who had, shorter career in the military, but he struggled to find himself, you know, when he left, and I. I think that's part of my. Why, you know, that part that that drives me to help people, especially those over 50 who want to reinvent themselves.
00:11:39:18 - 00:12:06:15
Suzanne Taylor-King
And that's basically what you're saying. You you've taken that knowledge from the past and your current, you know, certifications and combined it to be something really special for people. And I think being of service, whether it's military or after military, is, is all the same thing. Leadership is being of service to your team. what does that mean for you?
00:12:06:17 - 00:12:18:05
Suzanne Taylor-King
as a human? Let's let's forget military. Let's forget, job or current. What does that mean for you as a human to be of service like that to others.
00:12:18:07 - 00:12:49:03
Federico II Martinez
So growing up, and this is something that I just recently is just in my, my, my mind, it was like, wow, what is why am I so obsessed with with helping, people and serving others? And I do some serve my my family members and, my parents, very humble backgrounds and, you know, church people a and always, always willing to serve others with no questions ask.
00:12:49:08 - 00:13:01:20
Federico II Martinez
They give you without give, without having, you know, that type of people that, you know, I have I have two pans. and then I give you both of them if you need them, you know, I'll figure out later. It is.
00:13:01:20 - 00:13:02:12
Suzanne Taylor-King
Yeah.
00:13:02:14 - 00:13:28:04
Federico II Martinez
It is, my, my growing up, that's that's what I saw. And so when I, my my family members are like that, we very humble people and just, just like to serve others and and what fulfills me more is watching others succeed. in in having having a, a role in that success, without even asking for it.
00:13:28:04 - 00:13:54:19
Federico II Martinez
You know, what I'm saying is, is like you serve it, but, you know, looking for like, oh, that he did that because of me. Yeah. And you just do your part and get out of the way and let them succeed and clap. And I have experience. Yeah. And that, you know, I have people reach out to me years and years and years after we serve together, thanking me for things that I, I help them do.
00:13:54:20 - 00:14:08:09
Federico II Martinez
And I mean, doing it like, wow, this is. And that's what it's all about. Yeah. that's what. Well, when you get that special email, text, messages. This is amazing. Yeah, that's what it's all about. And you don't know that.
00:14:08:11 - 00:14:36:16
Suzanne Taylor-King
You never know that ripple effect, you know, or or how long? yeah. Between between when you affect someone and the result that that brings to someone else's life. It could be three minutes, it could be 30 years. But going out there and planting seeds every day, it's always been a mission for me since I was in health care.
00:14:36:20 - 00:14:59:09
Suzanne Taylor-King
Right. It was. Plant those little seeds every day. You never know when it's going to grow, or you never know when it's. It's kind of like karma or the universe. It's it's going to come back to you. but we don't do it or the comeback. We do it because it's so great to serve other people.
00:14:59:11 - 00:15:24:16
Federico II Martinez
Right? And it's like like this podcast, your podcast and your past orgasm you have. So one is getting a search the web and find a podcast is going to resonate with them. Yeah. You just of like years ago it's been there and I was like, oh my God, it hit me. Yeah, it was just helping without knowing. You never know who's watching what's who's how is it going to affect, positively impact lives.
00:15:24:16 - 00:15:26:07
Federico II Martinez
And so it's amazing.
00:15:26:09 - 00:15:59:06
Suzanne Taylor-King
Such an important reminder to not be driven in today's day and age of distraction and social media, being driven by followers or like, dogs or. Oh, how many people were at your event? I think it's such an important reminder to be driven by the service, and you never know who's looking or watching or listening. It's not always about the thumbs up or how many people are following you.
00:15:59:08 - 00:16:46:02
Suzanne Taylor-King
because follow up, I personally know somebody with 50,000 followers on a platform, and they've never made a dime from it, so that's not what matters in a business. And I think being an example of that is really key. So how do you stay in that mindset? I mean, because military mindset is huge. how do you stay in that mindset of service and not get caught up in the, I guess, the vanity metrics of, you know, who I'm supposed to be online versus who I am right here.
00:16:46:04 - 00:16:49:03
Suzanne Taylor-King
How do you do those two is simple.
00:16:49:03 - 00:17:14:21
Federico II Martinez
I'm just one one person. I don't have, two personalities. What you see is what you get, you know, and, we go online and then we go, in person is different now. You know what? You see what you get. I my core values are strong to be broken and me and deviate from other things. So I know I get up every morning with, with, a mission of, trying to articulate a message.
00:17:15:01 - 00:17:38:02
Federico II Martinez
We make a post or anything that's going to inspire someone that they really needs to see, or, or hear it. So, yeah, I don't I it's not going to break me or, or persuade me to do something that I, it's not a with with with my, my core values. And, you know, I'm pretty pretty grounded in 21 of doing.
00:17:38:04 - 00:18:17:22
Suzanne Taylor-King
I like that my, my stoic philosophy reading this morning was all about doing what's hard, because if it was easy, everybody would do it. And it's it's why I don't get swayed into doing things just for the money, because I don't know, there's something there for me that every time I've done something to make money, like, I'm going to, I'm going to create this thing, or I'm going to do this thing just for the money.
00:18:18:00 - 00:18:21:17
Suzanne Taylor-King
Yep. Never works, never work, never works.
00:18:21:19 - 00:18:48:20
Federico II Martinez
and we're winning now the hard way, too, you know? Yeah. Yeah. And money will come eventually. But, you know, unless we're going to be, pure transparency and honesty. I made some mistakes. And because, I was trying to go, trying to fast the fast way. The fastest path to this is that the navigation in the like in the military, you know, and when you navigated, you put the put your, your your plot and.
00:18:48:20 - 00:19:10:22
Federico II Martinez
Okay, this is the shortest route. But in life and and to succeed and environment and to become successful in this it takes time. Is there a straight line? Is not a straight line. It it's the weirdest thing. You're going to go in circles going back reset taking me, you know, bent out, cry, scream, whatever. And then you know I get into it again.
00:19:11:00 - 00:19:11:12
Federico II Martinez
Yeah.
00:19:11:14 - 00:19:42:08
Suzanne Taylor-King
You you just described entrepreneurship. perfectly. it's it it really is that I, I don't know how many times you've tried to fast track things for me. It's always okay. What's the shortest? What's the shortest route to doing XYZ? And if I think someone else has the answer, I'll pay for the answer. The answer has never been with someone else.
00:19:42:10 - 00:20:06:07
Suzanne Taylor-King
It's always right here. And that's the hardest thing to remember as an entrepreneur. When you're getting impatient for that next big success or that next win, how do we stay grounded in the realizing that the journey is here? Not somewhere out there I know.
00:20:06:07 - 00:20:18:01
Federico II Martinez
So so yeah, I listen to I forget which podcast was this, but there's an individual, talking about the the level. So why why are you doing things right.
00:20:18:03 - 00:20:18:18
Suzanne Taylor-King
Yeah.
00:20:18:20 - 00:20:37:03
Federico II Martinez
And you go to go deep and why you doing x y see and continue to ask yourself you want to get there X this fast and easy to y. And then the answer to that is just ask again why do you want to do that until you find your real cause in your why. Like oh my goodness. And the real is so do you really need to do that?
00:20:37:03 - 00:21:06:03
Federico II Martinez
And yeah, within 360 life is 3D or 4D now and that it's not a one dimensional. There's a lot of things that can go right or wrong, but you got to think through it. And the military, with great help of planning and and in executing, and we put the time and we spend more time planning and then a little time executing, because if you were planning properly and you just go execute honestly.
00:21:06:05 - 00:21:07:22
Federico II Martinez
Yeah, yeah.
00:21:08:00 - 00:21:32:01
Suzanne Taylor-King
Is is there a piece from your military background, about making a plan, but always having a plan B or C or, I can't remember what it was called, but like a failure protocol, like, okay, if plan A doesn't work, you're going to do this in this contingency plan.
00:21:32:03 - 00:22:07:22
Federico II Martinez
Is it plans? Yeah. Oh, you got to think about it. You know the primary. Yeah. The primary ultimate. And then I call it pace plan. So primary ultimate continuous and emergency. So there's four options right there. This is my yeah that you can pick in in case things don't go your way. So so you know we have that in, in, in a in the back of your mind, and always engage and make sure that everyone is clear, that, you know, this is how you got to we we are going to react if things don't go our way and best discuss as a team.
00:22:08:00 - 00:22:37:05
Suzanne Taylor-King
So yeah. Yeah. I, I see that as being so valuable for a CEO, a team leader, no matter what profession. but tell us a little bit about the people that you serve, your dream clients and all that. Actually, that military planning background actually helps them so much.
00:22:37:07 - 00:23:15:10
Federico II Martinez
So. So dream client is, people in leadership positions, or, you know, and entrepreneurs that are struggling primarily with leadership, challenges within their organizations. and everyone is challenged, is challenged by that. everyone has that issue. And again, because there's so many elements, in the event, affect leadership, especially in big organizations. How do you how do you impact all the way to the, to the last person, you know, if you got 1000 people or 100 people, whatever it how do you you talk to everyone in that chain.
00:23:15:10 - 00:23:39:14
Federico II Martinez
So everyone is in the same sheet of music. So, like I mentioned earlier, if you our success rely on your team, you know, and this year. So kudos is on you. But if you're running an organization, unique band on your team, you been on your team and keeping in mind that that your team, do not quit the organization.
00:23:39:14 - 00:23:48:12
Federico II Martinez
They quit. Quit their managers and leaders. And so you got to be very strong on that. Yeah. you know, what was the other part of the question?
00:23:48:14 - 00:24:07:05
Suzanne Taylor-King
Well, I, I just saw it helping so much a leader become somebody the team wants to follow versus somebody they have to follow. And, I think that planning piece is really key and.
00:24:07:06 - 00:24:08:14
Federico II Martinez
Oh, yeah.
00:24:08:16 - 00:24:29:11
Suzanne Taylor-King
Yeah. Talk a little bit about what that looks like for you with an engage with a client. What's what's an engagement look like with them, you know, and that trickle down effect I want to hear more about that. You said, you know, so from the top down, right?
00:24:29:13 - 00:24:56:14
Federico II Martinez
Yeah. So I've been on the at the end of bad coaching or not. So the number one thing you had to do with a client is collecting. You got to have that chemistry. You know, if you don't have a connection with a client, they're not going anywhere. so, and, and you can tell right away if you, if you're fit or not and, with the mind, with the, with the mentality that you're trying to help everyone.
00:24:56:16 - 00:25:18:18
Federico II Martinez
You know, I have a vast network of individuals that I can reach out and and say, yeah, this this will be a better fit. So the first thing is connecting with the client. getting that trust with the client is, is essential. that client's not going to tell you all the 100% of your problems. They're going to tell you 25.
00:25:18:20 - 00:25:20:18
Suzanne Taylor-King
Yes. Yeah, yeah.
00:25:20:22 - 00:25:53:03
Federico II Martinez
When you start, like, failing the audience, you know, is that's what we do. We humans, we we just hold back. if I don't trust you, I'm not going to tell you everything. Well, some people will tell you everything, but, most people don't. so connecting, gaining the trust and then working on a plan that works for the individual, not doing the the not doing which we'll call it everything for the individual worth making the individual do it for himself.
00:25:53:03 - 00:26:09:02
Federico II Martinez
Like discovering, discovering the solutions with, with the invisible hand behind it. and guidance. That's that's how the only thing that works if you do it for the family and you just creating nothing so.
00:26:09:04 - 00:26:38:21
Suzanne Taylor-King
Truly, truly. I know early in my health coaching career, I started out as a health coach 15 years ago, and I used to try to do it for people. Yeah, and maybe it was mental because I, I couldn't, you know, make someone eat right or show up for exercise. But if somebody didn't want it bad enough, there had to be, like you said, that.
00:26:38:21 - 00:26:47:18
Suzanne Taylor-King
Why? And I wish I had known that. Seven layers deep activity. I think it came from Tony Robbins the first time I heard.
00:26:47:18 - 00:26:50:02
Federico II Martinez
I when you were Tony Robbins, there.
00:26:50:04 - 00:27:16:23
Suzanne Taylor-King
Were seven layers. The right to take your wife down, seven layers. And I didn't do that with my clients in the beginning. And, you know, if you don't have a clear why for fitness and exercise or business, then getting up every day and doing it isn't going to happen. There's going to be some saboteur there ready to say donuts for breakfast today.
00:27:17:01 - 00:27:44:06
Suzanne Taylor-King
You know, it's always there. It's always going to be there. Your wife has to carry you through. And I think that really in my research of you that stood out to me, you know, not only your content, your presence, your about page, you know, your description on LinkedIn that stood out to me that that's super clear for you.
00:27:44:11 - 00:27:50:08
Suzanne Taylor-King
Your why and why you do this. you want to share with us?
00:27:50:10 - 00:28:12:11
Federico II Martinez
No, thanks. Let me go back real quick with with, the other element is, once you put, you know, once you connect, make that trust and start building a, a plan that both of you are figuring out accountability. So the it is the, the next step and, you know, and you had to be a it's not like here here's the cheat.
00:28:12:13 - 00:28:37:06
Federico II Martinez
Go do things. Oh see you see you know I'm very very big on accountability and and ownership. Ownership of the person. because, you know, we're in this together with and one of the things that carried me a lot during the military is that my soldiers were mine. You know, I their they're mine. Is anything happened? It's my responsibility.
00:28:37:06 - 00:29:03:19
Federico II Martinez
Yeah. They have a piece. But I am responsible for, for the success if failure of whatever happens under me. So I was very, very big on, accountability and ownership of individuals. If you were on the my radar. Oh, my God, you. I have to make sure that you were good. Yeah. I said yeah. So just want to put that out there and.
00:29:03:19 - 00:29:05:13
Federico II Martinez
Yeah. Yeah.
00:29:05:15 - 00:29:38:01
Suzanne Taylor-King
Yeah. Self ownership. I, I'm really, All right. So the question I want to ask about self ownership, I see it as a huge issue in today's business world. Yeah. Of people not taking responsibility for their own actions. The fingers always pointed outwards. It was somebody else's fault or somebody else's. This or you know, I couldn't do it because of this, this and this.
00:29:38:03 - 00:29:50:05
Suzanne Taylor-King
How do we get past that point of it being stigmatized or bad to take ownership for mistakes?
00:29:50:07 - 00:30:35:02
Federico II Martinez
It is a practice, you know, and you put it like it's it's hard because we did one wrong. We didn't want to go. We don't want you know, you got to humble yourself and and get to a point like, yeah, you know yeah it has to be practice. It has to be practice. and and once we figure out that it is better when we accept and move on than spending unnecessary energy of of trying to deflect the blame or whatever it is, to others or away from the real cost of the problem.
00:30:35:04 - 00:30:44:13
Federico II Martinez
yeah. Let's we we we we, we continue to that, practice that and getting humble enough to, to take ownership. But it's not going to change is going to be worse.
00:30:44:17 - 00:30:52:18
Suzanne Taylor-King
So yeah. Does it really come back to self-awareness. Do you think as a leader.
00:30:52:20 - 00:31:18:00
Federico II Martinez
Yes. yes. We all have, blind spots. Of course. Yeah. we think that we're doing things the right way, but there's someone over there watching to say, why did that? Hell, is Rico doing well? The world when X, y. See, if we go here, that game is about to hit a wall. yeah. Which is a self-awareness is critical.
00:31:18:00 - 00:31:35:03
Federico II Martinez
That's the coach is is your other set of eyes, your your wife, your best friends, you know, your support group. They're another set of eyes that, that you need to rely on. And it'll leverage with, with these are not going, your way.
00:31:35:05 - 00:32:18:00
Suzanne Taylor-King
Oh, for sure. I, I have two people in my life, one in particular. when I ask him, well, how is this or how is that? Or can I get your feedback on something? I'm already prepared that it's going to be negative, even if I think I did a great job. He has the uncanny ability of showing where it could have been better, and that's an unbelievable gift in a relationship, whether it's with your coach or your business bestie.
00:32:18:02 - 00:32:51:16
Suzanne Taylor-King
And I think having that makes you better as a leader. So coaching makes you better as a leader. Consulting, mentorship, having a business bestie who will actually do that for you, what has that meant in your career? not just your coaching career, but all the way along your journey. What does that meant? Getting that feedback so that you can improve?
00:32:51:18 - 00:33:18:02
Federico II Martinez
Yeah. Is is a brings there a set of, calm calmness, you know, when you are struggling to, think so and things are not going away. You have this, this, this perfect storm, about to to happen and in and you got individuals that basically have your back regardless and tell it like it is.
00:33:18:04 - 00:33:18:21
Suzanne Taylor-King
Yeah.
00:33:18:23 - 00:33:49:10
Federico II Martinez
That's, that is, that is essential whatever. Like it is with love. Not to like it is to to bash you or take you or stomp you. Is it is it there's a break between. Yeah. but with everything. When, when Sam was saying I got your back and they truly do. yeah. It just brings a level of peace that, you know, and I can explain.
00:33:49:12 - 00:34:14:03
Federico II Martinez
you know, in the military, I had a I had an individual. I have individuals that were my right few people that that when they said, sure, I got it, I was able to sleep well, no individual sits there, I got it, I was asleep, my phone to ring. you know, I got PTSD on my ring to when I was a commander, I believe.
00:34:14:08 - 00:34:15:15
Federico II Martinez
Oh, my goodness.
00:34:15:17 - 00:34:18:05
Suzanne Taylor-King
You don't use that ringtone anymore, do you? Oh, it.
00:34:18:05 - 00:34:29:10
Federico II Martinez
Doesn't exist is. Oh, wait, I'm not going to say no, but I still in my head is still in my head. And I bring it up and like, bring it brings me back to Germany and like, oh my goodness.
00:34:29:11 - 00:34:32:00
Suzanne Taylor-King
Oh yeah.
00:34:32:01 - 00:34:33:07
Federico II Martinez
Yeah, it's almost midnight.
00:34:33:07 - 00:34:36:09
Suzanne Taylor-King
Why is this ringing no good. Yeah yeah yeah.
00:34:36:09 - 00:34:37:07
Federico II Martinez
Yeah.
00:34:37:09 - 00:34:51:08
Suzanne Taylor-King
Well, I think the most powerful question we can ask ourselves is how can I do better? what does that look like for you right now? How can you do better? And what are you currently working on?
00:34:51:10 - 00:35:11:10
Federico II Martinez
So how can I do better? Is this an old thing? Every day you gotta find something that that, Opportunities for growth and learning. Learning and learning experience. That's how you do better. People think that, that having that. And that's saying if ain't broke, don't fix it. you know, if it ain't broke, how we can make it better?
00:35:11:10 - 00:35:29:14
Federico II Martinez
That's that's always way, always, always. So always looking for opportunity, for growth, always learning, always reading something. and then it will give you a little bit of a lift in the expertise that you are, pursuing. So.
00:35:29:16 - 00:35:37:10
Suzanne Taylor-King
Yeah, that perfect outlook. what are you currently working on in your business and how can we support you?
00:35:37:12 - 00:35:44:09
Federico II Martinez
So the first thing I'm working on is on myself. Okay. So nice.
00:35:44:11 - 00:35:45:19
Suzanne Taylor-King
Nice answer.
00:35:45:21 - 00:36:19:00
Federico II Martinez
Well, yeah. Self-development. getting certifications. I'm pursuing a a program management certification. so that's going to be a while. And it's a tough certification, but I'm pursuing that. So, you know, opening up doors for other, opportunities. also have my business, register as a, as a disabled veteran. So that that is a, a great plus, so that I can, compete for government contracts and other things.
00:36:19:00 - 00:36:48:16
Federico II Martinez

00:36:52:14 - 00:36:57:05
Suzanne Taylor-King

00:36:57:07 - 00:37:25:17
Federico II Martinez

00:37:25:19 - 00:37:27:13
Suzanne Taylor-King

00:37:27:15 - 00:37:30:13

00:38:09:20 - 00:38:26:18
Federico II Martinez
You know, they don't give up. They are always, you know, ace in legal cow fighting is illegal, but Puerto Rico is still going to do it. and when you see them fight, they fight till the end to get, you know, they don't they don't take a step back. and we're very proud of, of, calling ourself gadget those.
00:38:26:21 - 00:38:41:23
